Explanation

So perhaps a little bit of explanation is needed for the name of the blog. Shane & Shane have put out a song on their latest cd called Embracing Accusation. Shane Bernard told the story behind the song at a concert I was at, and I totally understand where he is coming form.

I became a Christian when I was 7, and ever since the age of 17 I have really dealt with whether or not I am really saved. The Devil knows that is the best way to get at me. Sometimes I lay awake for hours at night, wondering if I were to die right then, would I go to heaven, all the while thinking about all the sin that is in my life, and how I should be better at this whole Christian thing at almost 15 years, but I’m not. I look at my life, and I think there is no way that God’s love and forgiveness are still extended to me, I’ve just screwed up too much for too long. I really struggle with this often, its probably one of the few things that has remained steady in my walk with Christ.

So as I deal with this, I listen to Shane talk about the writing of the song, and how the Devil was even using scripture to condemn him, but how the Devil will leave things out that he does not want us to remember.  That particular verse is Galatians 3:10, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.”  However in verse 13 it says “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us.”

So then he plays the song, which I had heard before but had never really got.  The whole song is talking about condemnation and the Devil pretty much, but at the very end, it says to little words, that I have to remember all the time, “Jesus Saves.”  That covers over all of my sin and means the Devils condemnation means nothing.

So the meaning is, I understand that the Devil is going to try to accuse me and get me down and condemn me, but I know that Jesus Saves and that is powerful enough to stop the Devil’s accusation and to cover over my sins.

The father of lies
Coming to steal
Kill and destroy
All my hopes of being good enough
I hear him saying cursed are the ones
Who can’t abide
He’s right
Alleluia he’s right!

The devil is preaching
The song of the redeemed
That I am cursed and gone astray
I cannot gain salvation
Embracing accusation

Could the father of lies
Be telling the truth
Of God to me tonight?
If the penalty of sin is death
Then death is mine
I hear him saying cursed are the ones
Who can’t abide
He’s right
Alleluia he’s right!

Oh the devil’s singing over me
An age old song
That I am cursed and gone astray
Singing the first verse so conveniently
He’s forgotten the refrain
Jesus saves!
