Well I completely understand where you are. Jonny and I are in the same place. Where we end up, where I will be teaching, his job, everything is up in the air and we are trying to wait patiently on God. I am resting on Philippians 4:5-7 currently. I'll be praying for you!

Perhaps I'm too cynical, but I think mostly what folks are really looking for is to feel something. But, not just to feel, to feel mostly in their emotions as opposed to their being. You know how Jesus says the poor will be with you always? I think part of that is an idea that we can only handle so much agony, so our hearts can not begin to be broken to the extent of God's. The flip-side of that coin is that we don't allow ourselves the agony which is proportional to our ability. If one were to equate american christians to an army, then I think we're like the shock troops...in and out. We, like much of the society around us, just don't have the staying power to be in the trenches for extended periods of time.

I guess what I'm saying is that there is a great unsaid emphasis on being hearers (and singers) of the word, but not of being doers. Doers requires a fundamental shift in our being, which ends up being very difficult to express in words both to our friends and to ourselves.

Ryan,

That's sounds good. I applaud your willingness to make such a bold statement about who you desire and are called to be. Not only that, but even outlining how you will live that out. The words we say are the things to which we are held.

I have a question/possible divergence of opinion with one thing. It has to do with "judgement". I see and hear this interpretation of "Judge not lest ye be judged" a lot, insofar as it it taught that we shouldn't judge other people. My question is this, do you really think that's a proper biblical interpretation of the scripture? We always seem to ignore the verse immediately following, which states that we should remove the plank from our own eye so that we may remove the speck from our neighbors. I read that and get the feeling that Jesus is not saying we shouldn't help our neighbor, we just shouldn't be hypocritical about it. Moreover, if we are not to judge, then how do we deal with the original "cheif of sinners" Paul kicking that guy out of the Corinthian Church for sleeping whit his mother-in-law and handing those two guys over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme in Titus? I realize a big part of this may be involved in the over-broad definition of the word "judge" in our language. But, I feel like the church renders itself impudent in standing up for what is right...justice, mercy, and righteousness...because we cop out to not "judging other people". Its just a though, its something that I have been going over a lot in my mind lately and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

His class really made me think on this too. I can see how in some instances that the will of God may be somewhat fluid (that may not be the best word for what I'm trying to say). However, I think that the conclusion I've come to now is that most of the "big" things must, in large part, be ordered if not ordained by God.

It just seems to make the most sense to my head and my heart.
